Slide, negative scanning

Still remember the mood of the old slideshows? When grandpa put together the sheet, the slide-projector and the books needed for the height adjustment?

The good news is you can relive it and not only you, but all your relatives around the world.

Memorescue has the biggest capacity in Hungary for years now, in urgent cases we can scan 1000 slides a day.

Slide scanning requires paying attention, like a handicraftsman`s work; memories get the attention they deserve:

We pay attention to every slide one-by-one. First they are cleaned with scpecial film cleaner fluid then the scanner`s glass is cleaned with scratch-free wipe. Then comes the scanning, and the digital post production: rotation, cropping and retouching of pictures. All this can only happen manually, it is the only way we can guarantee our quality. Altough our mashines support the digital infra-red removal of dust and srcathes, automatism ruins 20-25% of the treated pictures, small details are vanished. These are the reasons we don`t use them, the quality of pictures depends only on our workmate`s education and experience.

Resolution is the amount of pixels in an inch (2,54 cm) of a picture. 300dpi means: a picture of 2,54cm is divided into 300 pixels through the process of scanning.

We can scan slides and negatives from 1200 to 6400dpi (real-optical, not interpolated) depending on the purpose of the scanning. If someone wants to print a B0 sized, 100cm picture, 4800dpi is recommended and if you would like to watch it on computer or TV, or send it to grandma in email, 1200dpi is often enough.

A little bit of help for choosing the right resolution (in case of a 24*36mm Leica slide):

  1200 dpi 2400 dpi 4800 dpi
Size in pixel 1600*1100 3200*2200 6400*4300
Size of file JPG 24bit 2700 KB (2,6 MB) 8000 KB (7,8 MB) 28800KB, (28,1Mb)
Size of file TIFF 48bit 11000 KB (10,7 MB) 45000 KB (43,9 MB) 167000 KB (163 MB)
Fits to a DVD in JPG 1820 pcs 620 pcs 160 pcs
Fits to a DVD in TIFF 410 pcs 100 pcs 28 pcs

Our experience shows, it is not worth to go above 2400dpi, only the pixels will get bigger. There are some specifically fine-grained (ISO 15-25) films where it is worth to scan on 4800-6400dpi - these takes only half percent of our work. They make awesome pictures.

The prices of scanning always contains:

  • The chemical cleaning of slides or negatives;
  • The scanning with scanners with the best color resolution (Dmax=4.0);
  • The rotation and cropping of pictures;
  • The restoration of colors;
  • The basic retouch of pictures;
  • The 48bit scanning into TIFF;
  • The qualitative converting into 100%, 24bit JPG pictures;
  • The copying into any kind of USB drive;
  • And above 100 pieces the burning to Verbatim DVDs. (Under 100 pieces it costs 990 HUF)

After scanning we store the pictures for a week for quality assurance. The basic retouching means the correction of quickly repairable damages, it must be acknowledged that the making of a fully reconstructed picture of high resolution can take 2-3 hours. If the slides are well stored, then retouching means to clean out a few lints - it is included in the prices of scanning.

What to pay attention to when ordering scanning?

-It is advisable to name every slide box or negative roll, these will be the names of folders they will be scanned into. Without names, the folders will be numbers.
-You don`t have to clean the films at home, we have our tried methods, and this service is also included in our prices. We work with special chemicals and dust-proof wipes.
-You can save time, if you know exactly what you want to do with the saved memories - this way we can offer you the targeted resolution and drive/DVD.
-If you have glassed slides and would like to save 24-24 HUF/slide, then get the slides out of their frame. It is enough if you only bring the films in a named envelope. You save money, we can work faster.
-Decide in advance the drive you want to take your memories. It can be a pendrive, DVD, HDD or shall we send them in e-mail?
-Select and isolate the pictures that need a complex renewal. Some people ask for a 10 minute retouch, it`s enough for repairing a lots of scratches. Others say to make it the possible perfect, money is no object.
